WHO Confirms Zero Risk if Undetectable and #SayZero Campaign Ignites X

#UequalsU = Zero Risk

World Health Organization releases policy brief confirming zero risk of transmitting HIV if undetectable as long as remaining to take antiretroviral therapy as prescribed.

During the recent International AIDS Society Conference (IAS) on HIV Science in Australia, WHO releases a new policy brief “The Role of HIV Viral Suppression in Improving Individual Health and Reducing Transmissions” using clear messaging to describe zero risk of transmitting HIV.

Ace Robinson from The Body Pro does a fantastic job of explaining the importance and significance of the affirmation from the WHO you should read saying:

“Within the brief, the authors conclude that “People living with HIV who have an undetectable viral load should be told that, along with achieving better health, there is zero risk of transmitting HIV through sex as long as they continue to take their antiretroviral therapy as prescribed.” And furthermore PLWH “who have a suppressed but detectable viral load should be told that, along with achieving better health, there is almost zero or negligible risk of transmitting HIV through sex as long as they continue to take their antiretroviral therapy as prescribed.”

Here are reactions from social media launching the #SayZero campaign supporting U=U (undetectable equals untransmittable).

For years, the HIV community has received timid and at times confusion messaging from public health authorities that were slow or overly cautious about wanting to use the word “zero” while describing risk of transmission.

Even Dr. Fauci, in an exclusive interview with imstilljosh.com, was very intentional with his description of risk saying “From a practical standpoint, the risk is zero, so don’t worry about it.”

But the WHO affirmation of “zero risk” is a vindication for the activists and advocates around the world sharing the messaging of U=U.
