16 HIV Nonprofits Just Got Awarded Up to $30,000 Each from Janssen. Cool!
All over the HIV activism community and policy-advocacy issues, you probably hear the phrase “underserved communities” right? This phrase typically, in HIV awareness, points to certain demographics within the epidemic that have barriers to accessing the care they need.
According to the release sent to imstilljosh.com:
“Young MSM of color and transgender women face significant barriers to medical care including stigma, discrimination, and a history of poor interactions with the healthcare system. Social determinants of health such as economic hardship, poor mental health, and lack of housing, employment and education also contribute to disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes for these marginalized groups.”
Janssen specifically targeted MSM (men who have sex with men) of color, transgender women and gender-nonconforming people.
This is the first year the company has earmarked funding specifically to address barriers to care for transgender women living with HIV and funding for gender-nonconforming individuals. The focus for both RFAs aligns with the White House’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which aims to increase access to care and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV and reduce HIV-related inequities and health disparities.
“The focus of our funding this year underscores our continued commitment to holistically addressing barriers to care among underserved, at-risk populations,” said Nefertiti Greene, President, Janssen Therapeutics, Division of Janssen Products, LP. “We believe that people living with HIV should have access to compassionate support, and communities play a pivotal role in providing resources to the most vulnerable.”
So congrats to the following organizations named recipients of this year’s awards and enormous thank you to Janssen for remaining committed to supporting nonprofits and make sure that the underserved get a chance. It’s pretty stellar of y’all!
